If you want to offer downloadable products on your site, there are some things to consider.

First, are you going to offer both tangible and intangible products? For example, are you going to sell graphics or files that customers can download AND sell products that you ship?

If you plan to offer downloadable products ONLY, then the set up is a bit simpler than if you offer both product types.

If you plan to offer downloadable products AND products that ship (tangibles), then there are some additional specifics that will need to be followed.

To offer both product types, you will need to utilize a weight based shipping method, USPS for example.

That is because a customer may shop at your site and purchase a tangible product and a downloadable product on the same order. The system differentiates these product types based on the weight.

Once you set up a weight based shipping method, tangible products will be assigned a weight just as they normally would. The downloadable products, on the other hand, will have a weight entered of 0 or ZERO.

So the first step in deciding to offer downloadable products is to set up your shipping as a weight based ship method. Then when you add products, you will add a weight to tangible products, and NO weight (zero) to downloadable products.
